"The responsibility of the Office of Works was... maintenance and modification of... the various royal houses in London and the home counties... It also had an important role to play in royal entertainments, notably in the fitting out of rooms, erection of stages, and construction of stage machinery for plays and masques." "...the principle has been adopted of extracting only such items as refer to building specifically designed for dramatic performance. Banqueting houses were used for masques and plays... In the case of theatre structures proper all the information in the accounts has been extracted... All entries referrring to plays and masques have been extracted and references to banquets, dancing, bearbaiting, running at the ring, have been included where association with grouped revels which included dramatic performance is possible. Barriers have also been included because often accompanied by speeches or verses."
