About This Item

Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott Company, 1896., 1896. First edition. First edition. Thick 8vo. Red cloth, with Confederate decorated sleeve holding a silver saber on the front cover, titles stamped in gilt on the spine, frontispiece (portrait of the author), xx [2], 13 - 690 pp., preface, illustrated, portraits, plates, several maps, appendix. A difficult item to obtain and told in the first person by one of the South's great generals. Information on the Battle of Manassas [Bull Run], Seven Pines, Fredericksburg, Sharpsburg [Antietam], Gettysburg, The Wilderness, and others. "Longstreet had a controversial role at Gettysburg, when he was unable to roll up the Union Army of the Potomac's flank on Day 2 and Pickett's Charge failed on Day 3. Though Longstreet tried to talk Lee out of the attacks, they went forward, and Longstreet criticized Lee about them afterward, making him reviled among other Confederates. In turn, they tried to blame him for the loss at Gettysburg." O'Keefe 1457 says "These are the Civil War remembrances of General James Longstreet, one of Robert E. Lee's key commanders. Covers the incident near Appomattox Court House in April 1865 when Longstreet and Custer met briefly under a white flag of truce, and Longstreet thought Custer to be both arrogant and demanding." Former owner's name on front pastedown sheet, light wear to spine ends and corners, two tiny scuffs to lower spine panel, else a very good sturdy copy of an important Civil War book.
