New York: Philosophical Library, 1979. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. 8vo. xi,(3),393pp. Green cloth, gilt spine titles. Frontispiece portrait; map endpapers and frontispiece map of Shanghai 1861-1863. Ownership blindstamp on title page, a stray ink mark on the margin of page vi, else this is a very good copy. The dustwrapper is now price-clipped; it has a closed marginal tear and crease along the bottom, is lightly rubbed and with a few small stains, but still in very good condition.
With the turmoil of 18th century China as a background, this is the life of Frederick Townsend Ward, an American adventurer who gave his life for China and became the first foreigner raised from being a mortal to one of the Gods of War, following an elaborate Confucian ritual.
