About This Item
New York: Thomas Snowden, Printer. Good+. 1842. Hardcover. A compact handbook to the New York City of 1842 & 1843. This almanac-style work provides detailed information about people engaged in a variety of occupations, government officials, law enforcement, NY post office, foreign consuls, city financial data, real estate values, water supply systems, ferries, newspapers and other assorted data. With a large fold-out map showing parts of Manhattan & Brooklyn, a fold-out view of New Amsterdam in 1659 and another of the Croton Dam. --- (NOTE: An additional folded map entitled "A Plan of the City of New York from an Actual Survey Made by James Lyne" is missing, per "An Index to the Illustrations in the Manuals of the Corporation of the City of New York, 1841-1870" by William Loring Andrews.) --- This work was expanded in later years, adding more data, several more illustrations and in larger format. --- In brown cloth-covered boards with debossed designs to covers and spine; gilt-stamped spine titling, city seal in gilt to both front & back cover, gilt-stamped name "Jacob Hays, Esq." to front. --- The large map has been folded improperly, causing it to be torn but it remains intact.
