About This Item

Rosenkilde et Bagger, Copenhague, 1966-1968 reprint of the fifth (best) edition, entièrement refondue et augmentée d'un tiers par l'auteur, 1860-1865. 9 vols, green cloth, gilt spine-titles, red and black spine-panels 8vo,. xv pp, 1902 columns + iv pp, 1848 + 1984 + 1476, [1], + 1800 + lxii, [i] pp, 1878 columns, + xv pp, 1138 columns + 1226 columns, +1592 columns, ills. An attractively produced reprint edition of this essential bibliography, well-printed on good paper. Roger Stoddard, in his excellent "Jacques-Charles Brunet, le grand bibliographe" writes of Brunet and his Manuel: "How do you thank a friend who advises you every day?... Always [Brunet] provides the correct date, the right edition, and the number of volumes or parts or plates that make up a complete copy. The most extravagant claims any publisher ever made about a reference book are not good enough for my friend Jacq.-Ch. Brunet - 'Le Grand Bibliographe' - and his Manuel du libraire et de l'amateur de livres. Brunet calls his work a Manual, or Handbook, for the bookseller. He expects you to have it in hand while you are pricing and describing a library you have purchased for stock. He does not call it a Bibliography or Catalogue because he has the ambition of guiding you in your work. He knows what a bookseller needs, and he knows that librarians and collectors need that information sometimes, but a bookseller needs it all the time. A Handbook, a Book at Hand, a Manual. He has sorted everything out for you, and he cites the best edition and the auction records." Breslauer and Folter: ".. The best and last of the general rare book bibliographies.. Brunet's annotations about the scholarly and commercial value of the books he listed are often still unsurpassed. There is hardly any other bibliography in which the wide range of its author's knowledge is more favorably displayed." Illustrated with occasional reduced facsimiles of printers' marks, title-pages, etc. This reprint set comprises the 5 volume main alphabetical sequence (AA-CHY, CIA-GYR, HAA-MYV, NAA-RZA, SA-ZYL), theTable Methodique and Notices des Journaux (Volume 6), the 2 volume supplement A-M and N-Z and the Dictionnaire de Geographie. Top edges slightly duststained, one or two minor bumps to spine-ends or corners, otherwise a Very Good bright set.
