Baltimore,: 1921., 1921. 1 page. Single-sided typed letter on Halsted's letterhead, verso holograph reply from Turkington. Fine. [Details on request]. LETTERS BY HALSTED ARE EXTREMELY RARE IN TODAY'S MARKET. The letter is typed on Halsted's letterhead bearing the address of his mansion at 1201 Eutaw Pl. in Baltimore, which Harvey Cushing once described as "a great, magnificent, cold stone house, full of rare old furniture, clocks, pictures and whatnot in topsy-turvy condition, cold as a stone and most unlivable" (Cushing in Michael Sragow). The letter reads: "My dear Mr. Turkington:/ I shall be greatly interested to note the result of the/ operation performed on you at the Johns Hopkins Hospital by Dr. McClure on the/ 7th of December, 1914./ Will it be convenient for you to meet me in my office/ on the fourth floor of the Surgical Building, Johns Hopkins Hospital, on/ Friday morning, March 18, at 10o'clock [sic]?// Very truly yours, Wm. ISBN: 0820317713 "Ranging in subject from England's poor laws to the Human Genome Project, The Rhetoric of Eugenics in Anglo-American Thought is one of the first books to look at the history and development of the eugenics movement in Anglo-American culture. Unlike other works that focus on the movement's historical aberrancies or the claims of its hardline proponents, this study highlights the often unnoticed ways in which the language and ideas of eugenics have permeated democratic discourse. Marouf A. Hasian, Jr. not only examines the attempts of philosophers, scientists, and politicians to balance the rights of the individual against the duties of the state, but also shows how African Americans, Catholics, women, and other communities--dominant and marginalized--have appropriated or confronted the rhetoric of eugenics. / Hasian…

Boston:: Printed by David Clapp, 1847., 1847. 8vo. 29, [3], xviii pp. Original brown printed wrappers. Near fine. This is the one and only publication of Martin Gay, though he was learned and lectured widely. Publishing his papers was not something he did more than this once. ?He published nothing in his own name except a pamphlet, in the year 1847, entitled, ?Discovery, by Charles T. Jackson, M.D., of the Applicability of Sulphuric Ether in Surgical Operations.? Whatever difference of opinions may exist as to the question at issue in the controversy respecting the discovery of Etherization, there can be none as to the ability, fairness, and gentlemanly spirit with which that production is written, nor the generous devotion of friendship which prompted him to undertake the defense of what he believed, with the strongest conviction, to use his language, to be 'the cause of truth and justice.?? ISBN: 0521363551 "Charitable Knowledge explores the interconnections between medical teaching, medical knowledge, and medical authority in eighteenth-century London. The metropolis lacked a university until the nineteenth century, so the seven major voluntary hospitals - St Bartholomew's, St Thomas's, Guy's, the Westminster, St George's, the Middlesex, and the London - were crucial sites for educating surgeons, surgeon-apothecaries, and visiting physicians. Lawrence explains how charity patients became teaching objects, and how hospitals became medical schools. She demonstrates that hospital practitioners gradually gained authority within an emerging medical community, transforming the old tripartite structure into a loosely unified group of de facto general practitioners dominated by hospital men. As hospital…

"In this book, real life photos are used to help young people feel more comfortable with interacting with other children and making new friends. A Note From Fred Rogers: A child's first visit with a pediatrician usually comes soon after birth. It may be months or even years later, though, that a child first shows fear about going to see a doctor. The worry of an injection or some other unfamiliar medical procedure can trigger that fear. It can also appear because another family member may be feeling medical anxieties. And, of course, new body awareness and needs for privacy develop naturally in children's early years, so all these feelings can make it very hard for them to let doctors investigate the workings of…
