About This Item
Venice: Santini, 1776.. A copper-engraved map on laid paper, double hemisphere, with an extensive coloured cartouche. Plate size is about 26 x 19.5 inches (matted size: 35 x 29 inches). Original central fold, a very nice copy. An attractive large-format decorative double-hemisphere map of the World by Santini. Imprint at bottom: "A Venise / Par / Francois Santini / rue Ste. Justine / pres la dite / Eglise / Chez M. / Remondini". The map shows the Sea of the West (Mer de l'Ouest), and a conjectural projection of the NW Coast of America based on the Russian Voyages in the mid-18th Century, but depicting a direct NW passage via Hudson' Bay. There is no sign of Antarctica. The tracks of several 17th and early 18th Century explorers are shown, including Tasman, Quiros, Davis, Mendana, Anson and Magellan. A small piece of the New Zealand coast is shown. From Santini's Atlas Universel dressé sur les Meilleures Cartes Modernes [Venice, 1776-1780]. This is a large matted map which will incur extra shipping charges.
