Venezia: Presso Giovanni Battista Sgava, 1648. First Edition. Hardcover. Volume one. [64], 406, [1]p. With some pagination errors. Contemporary full vellum with lettering in ink on the spine, sprinkled edges. Engraved title, frontispiece of the author and twenty inserted plates with copper engraved portraits. Initials, head-pieces and tail-pieces. Gamba mentions that the most sought after copies are the ones with the inserted plates, like this copy. About Ridolfi, he states: "... la presente opera lo palesa scrittore giudizioso ne' precetti dell'arte, chiaro ed esatto nelle descrizioni, e rare volta pecca in fatto di lingua... " An in-depth look at the life and works of painters such as Andrea Mantegna, Giorgione, Vittore Carpaccio, Palma il vecchio, Lorenzo Lotto, Tiziano Vecellio, Jacopo da Ponte da Bassano, and numerous others. Includes tables with the names of the Greek and Roman painters cited, of the lives of the various painters described, of their works and their locations. Light toning to text block, a few old small professional mends to some of the leaves, old number in ink on the back cover. Overall, a nice, very good copy. In the Italian language. Gamba 2063.
