Randolph Barnes Marcy (1812-1887) was a General in the United States Army, an author and explorer of the American West. He was also part of the ill-fated expedition against the Mormons in Utah in 1857. His 1859 book, 'The Prairie Traveler: A Handbook for Overland Expeditions, with Maps, Illustration , and Itineraries of the Principal Routes between the Mississippi and the Pacific' became a popular guide book for travel to the West Coast.
