New York: Harper & Brothers, 1849. First American edition of Melville's third novel. Title pages dated 1849, 8 pages of ads at the end of volume II. Green blind stamped cloth with gilt spine lettering, xii, 13-365p; [5], x-xii, [1], 10-387p, 8p ads. First volume in fair condition; second volume good. Volume I has a badly chipped spine, front hinge partially internally cracked front free endpaper removed, text block sound, residue of an old tan paper makeshift dustjacket remaining on pastedown endpapers, pages uniformly lightly foxed throughout, chips to upper corners of dedication and preface pages affecting only blank areas, no names or other markings. Volume II had a sunned spine, good hinges, sound text block, similar paper residue inside covers, pages uniformly foxed throughout, no names or markings. . First US Edition. Hard Cover. Fair. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
