Folding map of The Mariposa Indian War, showing the campaigns of the Mariposa Battalion, in and around Yosemite. Cloth. 7" x 10 1/4". Many unopened pages. Tipped in frontispiece portrait from photograph of Eccleston.This is the1957 edition by the University of Utah Press. The Utah editions continue the first published diaries of Robert Eccleston, under the title "Overland to California on the Southwestern Trail, 1849", distributed to the Friends of the Bancroft Library in 1950. In addition to the diaries, the Utah editions contain the aforementioned map, Dr. Crampton's useful notes and Introduction, a full roster of the Mariposa Battalion, and a bibliography. Eccleston is the only member of the Battalion known to have kept a contemporary record of the War. While pursuing the Indians, the Mariposa Battalion explored the Yosemite valley, the Fresno Big Trees, and the High Sierra between the main forks of the Merced and San Joaquin Rivers.
