Hutchinson of London, London, 1962. Reprint. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Good Condition/Fair. Illustrator: Photographic. Introduction by author, list of illustrations. Pale grey coloured end pages. Black-and-white photographic frontispiece, of Charles Upham on home on his New Zealand farm. The text is illustrated with black-and-white photography. Navy blue coloured cloth covered boards with silver and gilt coloured titles to the back strip. Photographic dustwrapper with black and white coloured titles to the front panel and back strip. Quoting the front fold over panel blurb " ... Charles Upham, the only man living to have won the Victoria Cross twice, has become a legend in his own time. <snip> Upham won his first V. C. in the defence of Crete, when he destroyed enemy machine-gun posts single-handed. He was wounded and captured by the Germans in North Africa after leading a frontal assault on enemy guns which  she learnt after the war  one him his second V. C. in these actions he dramatically displayed his most distinctive characteristic  a supreme ability to calculate risks. He spent the rest the war in POW camps, including Colditz, where he was transferred after numerous attempts to escape from other camps." Softening and a little fading to the back strip edges with rubbing of the top book corners and lower book edges. The panel show a few marks and rubs stop age toning and foxing to the text block edges and to the pages. Offset tanning to the end pages with a erasure mark to the top right hand corner of the free front end page. Gift inscription, dated 1964, to the free front end page. A faint musty smell emanates when the book is opened. Chipping to the dustwrapper corners and to the lower back strip edge. The top back strip edge is torn and chipped with the laminate in some parts missing. Chipping and creasing of the top dustwrapper edge with a 1.5" tear to the top right hand corner of the front panel. Pieces missing to the top edge of the rear panel. reprinted before publication.
