Volume I offers three essential biographies by William De Howells, Albert Bigelow Paine (secretary to Twain and to whom he dictated his autobiography in his final years), and his daughter, Clara Clemens. Volume II contains contemporary reviews and responses to Twain's work, arranged chronologically by title and concluding with a section of 42 essays revealing the responses of other creative writers including W.H. Auden, T.S. Eliot, William Faulkner, D. Lawrence, George Orwell, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Rudyard Kipling, Bernard Shaw,Thomas Wolfe, Norman Mailer, Ralph Ellison, Robert Penn Warren, Herman Wouk and Malcolm Bradbury. Volume III presents critical essays on all the essential works arranged chronologically by work. Prominence is given to major works such as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Volume IV offers a twentieth-century overview of Twain covering such central themes as The Frontier and the West', 'Mark Twain's Burnout', 'The South, Slavery and Race', 'Mark Twain Sexuality', 'Mark Twain and Language'.
