About This Item
. Oil on canvas; signed and dated lower left: B Nebot 1751; canvas: 88.3 x 148 cm (34 ¾ x 58 ¼ in); framed: 99.1 by 157.5 cm (39 by 62 in).
Apart from his marriage in London 1729 or 1730, very little is known of Nebot's life, although he is generally thought to have been of Spanish birth or descent. The registers of St Paul's, Covent Garden include the burials of five of his children between 1731 and 1739 and his wife Mary in 1742.
He had a particular interest in depicting market scenes that included vegetable stalls, fish markets, and fruit vendors. Although Nebot initially specialised in topographical scenes of London, the urban scene in this painting is closer in style to the works by Peter Angelis (1685-1734).
