About This Item
Boston: Small, Maynard & Company. Very Good in Very Good dj. (c.1925). First Edition. Hardcover. [light wear to extremities, modest soiling to edges of text block, 1.5" closed tear at top of front endpaper; the jacket is a bit edgeworn, with minor paper loss at a few corners, general age-toning, a few surface-scrape marks on spine]. The first (and possibly last) collection in book form of the "Helen and Warren" syndicated column/feature about a typical American couple, which ran in numerous newspapers from 1910 until the early 1940s. Purporting to portray "married life as it is, not as it ought to be," these stories give us "the intimate and merciless portrayal of the comedies and tragedies that are a part of domestic life." A sort of earlier incarnation of "The Bickersons," Helen and Warren were front-jacket-blurbed as "America's Best Known Couple"; I wonder what Doug and Mary would have had to say about that? .
