About This Item
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons Book. Good. Hardcover. 1892. First Separate Printing, 53pp, illustrated by W. T. Smedley. Decorative cover design. Light to moderate soiling, else G. MARSE CHAN appeared first in Page's first book, IN OLE VIRGINIA. Thomas Nelson Page, (1853-1922), was born in the ancestral plantation in Hanover County, Virginia, of an aristocratic family. Two of his great-grandfathers were governors of Virginia and one was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. But the family was financially ruined by the Civil War and Reconstruction; and, it is said that Page drew on the romantic notions of the pre-war south, coupled with the gallantly borne misfortunes of the post war period, for much of his writing. His writing is sentimental by today's standards, but he had a good ear and is remembered for his depiction of black dialect..
