About This Item

New York: Philomel Books, 2005. Near fine in near fine dust jacket.. Signed first printing of this sweet autobiographical story about Spirin and his son nursing an injured crow back to health. Praised for his sinuous, illuminated manuscript-like illustrations, Russian-born Gennady Spirin has been called "one of the world's most significant illustrators of children's books" by the NEW YORK TIMES. Spirin's artistry has earned him accolades including four gold medals from the Society of Illustrators - his watercolors imbue children's books with visual magic. 10'' x 8''. Original color pictorial boards. Original unclipped ($14.99) color pictorial dust jacket. Illustrated in color. Unpaginated. Signed by Spirin to half-title page. Jacket and binding with a hint of bumping to corners. Bright and clean.

Synopsis

This is Gennady Spirin's own dear story about the day his son Ilya found a crow with a broken wing, and brought it home. The veterinarian told the boy that it would never fly again. "Put it to sleep!" he urged the parents. But the wild crow-Martha, they called her-was full of surprises. She most certainly made their home, her home, and one day she did fly! Would there be one more surprise? When she flew away that fall, would she return again? With Gennady Spirin's beautiful and delicate watercolor illustrations and the sweet memory of Martha's year as his guide, Martha takes flight once again.
