About This Item

New York: Harry N. Abrams. Fine with No dust jacket as issued. 1985. sted. First Printing. Hard Cover. 0810910861 . First edition, first printing. Two volumes in slipcase. The reproduced sketchbook is bound in half black faux leather over marbled boards, and is entirely reproduced in full-color. The accompying text booklet is in publisher's stiff card wraps and illustrated in B&W. Both are housed in the original cardboard box illustrated in B&W by Hockney. "Sketchbooks are intriguing visual records; they can reveal the inspirational sources of an artist's finished works. A travel sketchbook offered in facsimile reproduction can illuminate much about its creator. This volume is replete with the sort of witty anecdotal scenes that have made Hockney one of today's most important representational painters. A cogent artist's statement is also made in a booklet produced for this publication. Hockney records his personal feelings about sketchbooks and the creative processes they capture. Martha's Vineyard really serves as a jumping-off point for pen and color vignettes of interiors, friends' faces, random still lifes, and slumberous island views. However, the price and specialized focus of this facsimile will limit its acquisition to libraries actively serving artists and modern art scholars." - Paula A. Baxter, Museum of Modern Art Library.. The sketchbook is in perfect, pristine condition; unmarked, unread, tight, square, and clean. The text booklet shows on slight sunning along the edges of the covers only, the interior bright, fresh, unread, and clean. Their exterior box is mildly sunned and lightly soiled, but whole and strong. FINE. . Abrams Facsimile Reproduction Sketchbook Series Series. Color Illustrations. 4to 11" - 13" tall .
