About This Item
London: Trubner & Co., 1884. 9th edition. Nice copy. octavo. hardback in original cloth viii + 544pp., Both viscerally contested and exuberantly applauded, immediately upon publication, and for years to follow, this revolutionary and once radical book is seldom seen today, yet is replete with subjects still pertinent, these being the role of Islam, the history of the slave trade, the evolution of mankind, as well as the impact of war, religion, and liberty. It became known as a sort of "substitute bible for secularists," attempting to trace the development of Western civilisation in terms analogous to those used in the natural sciences, also presenting philosophies in support of political liberalism and social Darwinism. Attacked by Gladstone, admirers included H. G. Wells, Winston Churchill, George Orwell, A. A. Milne & Michael Foot. In "The Sign of the Four" Holmes describes it as "one of the most remarkable books ever penned". Lacks front end paper o/w a nice copy in green cloth
