About This Item

Providence: Privately Printed / Roger Williams Press, 1935. First edition. Hardcover. Good. light wear to tips, corners and edges of the book, a bit more to the jacket, clean and unmarked. First printing, no others noted. The endpapers show off-setting from a tipped in newspaper article from the Providence Journal,1936 giving some history of Thomas Willett's substantial Rhode Island connections. The father: John Brown(e), shipbuilder, perennial political office holder, founder of several towns, and one of the wealthiest men in the Plymouth Colony. Near the end of his life Browne returned to England. The husband: Thomas Willett (1605 – August 29, 1674) was a British merchant, Plymouth Colony trader and sea-captain, Commissioner of New Netherland, magistrate of Plymouth Colony, Captain of the Plymouth Colony militia and was the 1st and 3rd Mayor of New York City. Following his second term as mayor Willett withdrew to Swansea, Plymouth Colony and here, Mary Browne died. Willett retired in 1673, and died in 1674, at the age of sixty-nine. He was buried in the Little Neck Cemetery at Bullock's Cove in the Riverside area of East Providence, Rhode Island. The main street there now being Willett Ave. In his religious views, Willett was an independent. Most items ship with tracking numbers and (generally over $15.00) jacket protectors if applicable.
