various: various, 1958. No binding & hard cover. Mary Elizabeth Quackenbush Brush (1857-1940) was an American children's author. Born in Herkimer, New York, southeast of Utica, she was the daughter of Isaac and Mary Ann Rasbach Quackenbush. Her ancestors were among the very early settlers of the state, several having served with the Continental army in the Revolutionary war. She attended Herkimer schools and graduated from the old Madame Platt's Academy, Utica. In October 1877, she married Abram Stephen Brush, a native of Nyack, New York, and a graduate of Harvard Law School. They had 3 had three children: Henry Raymond Brush; Louise M. Brush; and Donald Livingston Brush. Her brother was Henry Marcus Quackenbush (1847-1933), an American inventor and industrialist who founded the H.M. Quackenbush Company widely known for its air rifles and for the invention of the metal, spring-jointed Nutcracker.

Mary E.Q. Bush collection contains over 12 items dating from 1883 to 1958, specifically, 6 books, 4 b&w photos, 1 scrapbook of clippings of her stories, several loose clippings and magazines, and 1 broadside.

Seven+ Ephemera:

• 1 Scrapbook, dark brown cloth, 78 pp., 1880s, containing clippings of Brush's stories published in various newspapers and magazines, with an alphabetical index (3 pp.) at the front in Brush's hand. • Several clippings and 3 journal issues (Our Youth, The Portal, and Junior World), 1887-1928, containing Brush's stories.

• 1 Folded broadside entitled The Tree of the White Christ, n.d.,

• 1 Christmas Greetings" in Brush's hand

• 4 small b&w photos of Brush.

Six Books:

1) Paul and Persis, or, The Revolutionary Struggle in the Mohawk Valley. Boston: Lee and Shepard; New York: Charles T. Dillingham, 1883. Green cloth, floral design on the upper board and spine, some fraying at the bottom of the spine and minor splitting on the front inner hinge. Slight water staining at the bottom of the front free endpapers. Signed by Brush with an annotation by Donald L. Brush, her son, presenting the book to Mary Brush Jones, her granddaughter, dated September 17, 1958.

2) Sarah Dakota. New York: Hunt and Eaton; Cincinnati: Cranston & Curts, 1894. Dark green cloth. Signed and annotated by Donald L. Brush, presenting the book to Mary Brush Jones, his daughter, dated September 17, 1958.

3) Island Patty. New York: American Tract Society, 1901. Bluish green cloth with a floral design on the upper board. Signed: "By Grandmother Bush" for Mary Louise, and dated April 15, 1932, with a drawing of a flower and an annotation by Donald L. Brush, her son, noting that Mary Louise is Mary Brush Jones, her granddaughter, and dated September 17, 1958.

4) The Coming of Caroline. New York: American Tract Society, 1903. Light blue cloth. Signed by Brush with an annotation by Donald L. Brush, her son, presenting the book to Mary Brush Jones, her granddaughter, dated September 17, 1958.

5) The Little Maid of Doubting Castle. New York: Eaton& Mains; Cincinnati: Jennings & Pye, 1901. Blue cloth. A presentation copy, signed and dated by Brush, dated Easter 1904, with an annotation by Donald L. Brush, her son, presenting the book to Mary Brush Jones, her granddaughter, dated September 17, 1958.

6) The Scarlet Patch: The Story of a Patriot Boy in the Mohawk Valley. Boston: Lee and Shepard, 1905. Yellow cloth, motif illustration of the American revolutionary war on the upper board and spine. One leaf (pp. 117-8) loose. Brush dedicated this book to "my little Donald". Signed and annotated by Donald L. Brush, presenting the book to Mary Brush Jones, his daughter, dated September 17, 1958.
