This is a shattering, powerful, humane novel about the India unknown to most Westerners. The book is a novel centered on leprosy, as disease the author as a doctor in a large Indian hospital, knows very well. Govind, a tailor, contracts leprosy, and is driven out of his home to join the world of the lepers. He meets Bapu, the leper leader, and becomes his horse and learns about the leper world as he carries him about. Govind finds peace after many adventures in the arms of Seeta, a young girl who is immune to leprosy. She goes north to bear their child and he goes seeking a new leprosarium to cure his disease and allow him to return to his wife. A clean very presentable copy in a Brodart mylar jacket.
