About This Item

Washington, D.C.: National Gallery of Art, 1944. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. Second edition. Folio. Near fine in very good dustwrapper with some modest wear at the extremities. Inscribed: "To Charles W. Beck, Jr.," of the Beck Engraving Company (the company that printed the color plates), "With our thanks and appreciation for the personal supervision he has given in the manufacture of this book, which has resulted in a volume of outstanding excellence, November 2, 1944," and Signed by David E. Finley (Director of the National Gallery of Art), Huntington Cairns, H.N.(?) McBride, and John Walker (Chief Curator and Director of the National Gallery from 1956-1969). Accompanied by a near fine copy of the first edition in a makeshift brown paper dustwrapper with a handwritten note on the front wrap: "First edition, Marked by Nat. Gal. for Color Correction." This copy was used by curators at the National Gallery to critique the color in the plates; most plates have their comments typed and annotated on slips of paper tipped in at the top edge. Two unique copies with a nice association.
