About This Item

Boston: Little, Brown and Company. Fair. 1928. Hardcover. An edition in fair condition. The cover and spine have small dents in them and the spine is becoming somewhat loose. There is a newspaper clipping adjacent to the title page that has caused discoloration, and there is a library slip pocket on back flyleaf; Matorni's Vineyard tells the story of a family's journey from poverty to prosperity in a small Tuscan winery. Starting with the patriarch, Giorgio, who immigrates to the United States from Italy in the 1920s, the family grows tobacco, produces wine, and builds a thriving business. But when Prohibition ends, Giorgio's son, Pietro, must find a new way to make money. In the 1970s, Pietro begins to make wine from Matorni's own grapes, and the family's fortunes begin to change. But as Pietro's children take over the winery, the family finds itself struggling to keep up with the changing times. In the end, Pietro's grandson, Gianni, is able to keep Matorni's Vineyard afloat, and the family is able to pass the winery on to the next generation in a much stronger position.; 8vo; 308 pages .
