About This Item

New York: Academic Press, 1979. First Edition. Octavo. First printing. xv, 581 pages, including index, illustrated. The fossils from the Francis Creek Shale Member in the Mazon Creek of northern Illinois constitute the single most varied Carboniferous flora and fauna known. The age is mid-Pennsylvanians, the rocks of marine and non-marine facies, and the biota includes over 350 species of plants and some 320 animals. The exceptional preservation of the soft anatomy of animals and plants make this occurrence of major importance to paleontology. Among the other scholars who have contributed to his work are G.C. Baird, C.W. Shabica; B.G. Woodland, R.G. Stenstrom and A.S. Horowitz. The longest section on the coelenterates, molluscs and arthropods is essential reading. The Field Museum sponsored this project which fills a major gap in paleontological literature. Bound in brown cloth lettered and decorated in in gold. A fine copy.
