With 2 maps, 12 coloured plates and 110 figures on 62 plain plates. ¶ A beautifully-illustrated history of Pre-Columbian American medicine. Separate sections deal with ancient civilizaions, the magico-religious and emperical aspects of medicine, knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pathology, infectious and parasitic diseases, surgery, public hygiene, the medical profession, therapy. Appendix (pp. 233-252) by Grmek deal with medical subjects in the iconography of ancient Mexican manuscripts. Concluded with an exstensive bibliography.
