About This Item

Ft. Benjamin Harrison, Indiana: ALS, 1917. ALS. Paper Letter. Fine. Letter from Harold J. Everett of Portland, Maine, a member of the Medical Officer's Training Corps at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana.. Framed with matte finish, monochrome photograph at center. Original letter in archival sleeve on verso. Letter reads in part: "...about 50 doctors have been drawn from this camp in the past two weeks for duty in France. The other day they made a request for twenty-five more to volunteer for immediate service. I did not placed my name down, preferring to wait for a while yet...The men who leave are ordered to Washington, but from what port they leave I cannot say. I shall all probably be eventually sent to a Foreign country - I am studying French now. The work is very hard....Affectionataly Yours, Harry." Fort Benjamin Harrison was established as a training center for the Indiana National Guard in 1904, located 10-miles north of downtown Indianapolis. During World War I, it became one of the largest Army training and mobilization sites in the United States, due to central location and proximity to major transportation lines.
