London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1899. First edition.

1899 ADDRESS TO MEDICAL STUDENTS AT ST. GEORGE'S HOSPITAL BY PROMINENT LONDON NEPHROLOGIST--COPY OF LEADING NEW YORK PSYCHIATRIST.

12 1/2 inches tall slim hardcover, brown pebbled cloth covers, gilt emblem of St. George & Dragon and title to cover, 47 pp, corners rubbed, decorative bookplate of Charles W. Pilgrim front paste-down, very good.

WILLIAM HOWSHIP DICKINSON (1832 – 1913) was educated at Cambridge and later trained at St George's Hospital. He authored several comprehensive monographs on kidney disease, and wrote one of the first accounts of familial kidney disease in which affected family members had proteinuria but did not have typical features of Alport syndrome. In addition to St. George's Hospital, he worked at Great Ormond Street Hospital where cared for children with neurological conditions, and he also served as curator of the museum at the Royal College of Physicians. He was President of the Pathological Society of London from 1889 to 1891.

PROVENANCE: CHARLES WINFIELD PILGRIM (1855-1934) The Pilgrim Psychiatric Center often referred to as the Pilgrim State Psychiatric Center stood once on over 800 acres of land in the town of Brentwood Long Island. The center officially opened in 1931 with an official transfer of about one hundred patients from the nearby Central Islip Psychiatric Center. The center was named after Dr. Charles W. Pilgrim. The doctor had been the New York State Commissioner of Mental Health at the beginning of the 20th century. What was extraordinary about the Pilgrim State Psychiatric Center was the sheer size of the institution. At its peak in 1954, Pilgrim State Hospital could claim to be the largest mental hospital in the U.S., with 13,875 patients.

Description:
London: Chappuis, [between 1859 and 1871]. Cabinet card (103 x 62 mm). Photographer's ticket to the verso. Just a couple of tiny spots. Excellent condition. A lovely carte de visite depicting the Crystal Palace in its permanent home at Sydenham sometime after 1856, when the Brunel water towers, one of which is visible in the photo, were erected. The structure was originally built to house the Exhibition of the Industry of all Nations (the Great Exhibition) in Hyde Park in 1851. Popular acclaim saw it preserved and reopened in Sydenham in 1854, but it was destroyed by a fire in 1936. This card bears the ticket of photographer Paul Emile Chappuis (1816-1887), whose Fleet Street studio operated between 1859 and 1871. Chappuis was also an inventor who held several patents on reflectors that would allow light into buildings that would otherwise require gaslights during the day. The firm that he set up to manufacture them was in operation until the Second World War.
