About This Item
London:: Sands & Co. 1901., 1901. 8vo. 153, [7] pp. 5 plates (including 1 large folding plate), ads; title reinforced a bit. Black- and gilt-stamped olive green cloth. Ownership signature of A.J. Forbes-Leith of Fyvie Castle, Aberdeenshire, 1902 [Lord Leith]. Very good. Before WWI the church ran a campaign against Spiritualism in Britain and America. Raupert, a convert to Catholicism, was appointed by the Pope to tour America and gave speeches, making exorcism a central theme, but staying anti-Spiritualist and anti-Modernist. He condemned the use of Ouija boards and warned further against exposing the public to demonic possession and exorcism. – Francis Young, A History of Exorcism in Catholic Christianity, Palgrave Macmillan, 2016, p. 205. PROVENANCE: Alexander John Forbes-Leith of Fyvie, (1847-1925), Lord Leith, came to America and headed several great steel companies. He was one of many caricaturized by Vanity Fair magazine.
