About This Item

First edition, a rare copy in original state, of Cauchy's great memoir on the theory of functions of a complex variable (pp. 599-799), submitted to the Académie des Sciences on 22 August 1814 but not published until 1827. "In 1814 he submitted to the French Academy the treatise on definite integrals that was to become the basis of the theory of complex functions" (DSB). "Between 1814 and 1831, the great French mathematician A. L. Cauchy created pratically single-handedly a new branch of pure mathematics. Complex function theory was and remains of central importance, and its creation marked the start of one of the most exciting periods in the development of mathematics" (Smithies, Cauchy and the Creation of Complex Function Theory, 1997). "In his introduction to the 1814 memoir, Cauchy remarks that the solution of many problems reduces to the evaluation of definite integrals, many curious and useful results having been obtained by Euler, Laplace and Legendre. Some of the evaluations of integrals by Euler and Laplace were, he says, first discovered by a kind of induction based on a passage from real to imaginary" (ibid., p. 24). Cauchy then states his intention to put this passage from the real to the imaginary on a rigorous basis. The memoir is divided into two parts devoted, respectively, to results equivalent to special cases of 'Cauchy's theorem' and to the 'residue theorem,' which he did not state in general form until 1831. Before the 1814 memoir was ultimately published in 1827, Cauchy adjoined a group of footnotes to it; these seem to date from about 1825. Their main thrust is that he abandons his earlier rule only to consider integrals with real integrands. He remarks that throughout the memoir many pairs of real equations can be replaced by a single complex equation. This volume of the Mémoires also contains Cauchy's 'Theory of the propagation of waves on the surface of a heavy fluid of indefinite depth' (pp. 6-312) which won him the Grand Prize offered by the Academy in 1816. "His results are now classics in hydrodynamics" (DSB). 4to, pp. [viii, including half-title and initial blank used as pastedown], 799, uncut and unopened. Original paper wrappers (slightly worn with spine partly defective at head and foot). Now protected and housed in a cloth clamshell box.
