About This Item
Memoires De Madame La Marquise De Larochejaqueleinby Madame La Marquise (Herself) third edition
Green marbled boards. Leather spine extending half-inch over board. 1/2leather. Chez L.G. Michaud, Paris (1816)
Fine for age. See scan. No dust jacket. Wonderful just to hold. Carved spine with panels and gilt title and decoration. Some darkening map borders. Small marks of where a protective cover has been 544 p. Marbled page edges. Large fold-out colored maps insurgency 1793 and line of march of La Grande Armee. Marbled page edges. Portrait frontis. Two terrific fold-out maps, BOTH with color, of the Vendee war (1793). THE VENDEE IS ON THE BAY OF BISCAY AND WAS (OR AM I MISTAKEN) ONCE UNDER THE ENGLISH CROWN. I believe it was part of the Aquitaine that Eleanor brought to Henry 11 as her dowry. It was yet another religious war. PORTRAIT OF THE MARQUIS, BORN 1777 AND KILLED 1815. PAGES ARE AS CLEAR AS THE DAY THEY WERE PRINTED 190 YEARS AGO. Probably the best copy on the market today. Note this is an upgrade of the first edition, (published 1815 in Bordeaux) with errors corrected, and some fifty pages longer. The maps alone are worth the price. Look at scan. Spine engraved leather. I think the boards are green leather but I could be wrong about that. Page edges are attractively mottled in the Georgian style 544 pages. See Encyclopaedia Britannica 11th edition Volume XVI. Large fold-out colored maps insurgency 1793 and line of march of La Grande Armee. BOOK IS IN FRENCH
The vendee war , the counter-revolutionary battles, horrors of the Vendee. The author's husband, the Marqus (born 1777, shot 1815) was a leading figure in government at the start of the French revolution,
Conseils en marbre vert . Dos en cuir étendant demi-pouce par-dessus bord . 1 / 2leather . Chez L.G. Michaud , Paris (1816 ) Fin de l'âge . Voir scan .
