About This Item

Princeton: Markus Wiener, 2000. xxii, 298pp. Or card covers. Very light edge wear to covers. Born a princess on the African spice island of Zanzibar, Emily Ruete (1844-1924) was brought up in a harem in the Sultan's palace, naturalized as a German through marriage, and then manipulated by both Germans and British in their efforts to gain control over the island. Her memoirs, set against a vivid portrait of political intrigue in the great age of European colonialism, offer a vivd portrait of 19th century arabic life, not only in the palace but in the city and plantations as well. The book also explores relationships within her own family and to the Arab and black communities, children's education, and the role of women in a polygamous society.. Third Printing. Trade Paperback. Very Good. 8vo.
