General condition notes: Good. These are ex-library copies, with typical stamps, etc. Bindings worn, with fraying spots; spine ends rolled and corners bumped. Edges generally tanned and lightly soiled, spines somewhat cocked. Lacking dust jackets, likely as published. Vol I shows binding separating at title page, which itself is partially separated. Vol II shows rear free endpaper (rfep) torn out and missing and a noticeable moisture stain to upper half fore-edge beginning about p. 489 to end, penetrating as much as a quarter inch into pages - no sticking. Foldout maps all confirmed present, in generally excellent condition, notwithstanding the occasional small closed tear to to a fold from previous use.

This handsome 19th Century set is enhanced by having the ownership signature of "Orin Peak" in neat pen script to both volumes. An Orin Peak served as a surgeon in the 20th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment from February 1863 until the end of the war; Peak later served as Oak Park, Illinois' first practicing surgeon and owner of its first drug store, passing away in 1905.
