About This Item

Toronto and New York: Oxford University Press, 1970. First edition. Hardcover. Owner's inscription on first free end-paper; else near fine /a little frayed with a one-inch tear. 8vo. Cloth. Pp xiv, 242. Frontispiece portrait by Adolf Dehn. Introduction by Leon Edel. This is one of the great memoirs of Paris in the 1920s. The author as a callow youth of 18 went there to make his mark as a writer. He encountered Robert McAlmon, Ernest Hemingway and many others. But as he says, "I now found myself thinking constantly of women". He became a gigolo and his dissolute experiences led to illness which necessitated his return to Canada without having written any great literature, except this memoir which however would have to wait some 35 years to appear.
