Memoirs in four volumes, New York: James Pott & Co., 1901.Small octavos, Regency Edition (preceded by 1856 French edition and 1857 English edition), marbled boards half-bound in red morocco with gilt lettering and devices stamped into 6 compartments on spines, top edges gilt, other edges untrimmed. Translated from the French and abridged by Bayle St. John.The duke (Louis de Rouvroy), with this account of the court at Versailles during the reign of Louis XIV, became known as one of France's greatest memoirists, maybe because of all the cat fighting: "The Saint-Simon that is revealed through the Mémoires had many enemies, and a hatred reciprocated by many courtiers (Wikipedia). In spite of its size, the present set is substantially briefer than the original French text.Condition: Near fine with a few minor marks on the covers and minor wear at the joints. Overall a beautiful set. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 4-volume set (complete). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting.
