Publisher's brown cloth with gilt titles to spines and blind decoration to boards. All edges untrimmed, later endpapers. Some spotting but generally clean. cloth a little worn to joints, chipping to spine ends, corners bumped. Very good. Following the first publication of Pepys's Diaries in 1825, Smith went on to publish this interesting collection of letters.

Complete in two quarto volumes, modern full leather bindings, but retaining original marbled pastedowns and endpapers with ownership bookplates of Sir Henry St. John Mildmay (Dogmersfield Library) whose library was auctioned in London in 1907. Edited by Lord Braybrooke using John Smith's transcription of the original diary. Pepys diary gave historians important insights into the Restoration of the British Monarchy, the Anglo-Dutch war, The Great Plague and the Great Fire of London. Illustrated with 13 engraved plates as called for, no half-titles. An attractive set, some pages foxed, frontis of volume one with some staining.
