Hartford: Published by class alumni, 1885. First Edition. Original cloth. Very Good. pp: iv, 156; 2 original photographs. 9.5" x 5.75" Presentation copy to Hon. George G. Barclay of Philadelphia, a member of the class of 1830, inscribed and signed by Cone. Bound at the back are two original, sepiatone photographic images, each 4.5" x 8" with tissue guards. On pages 155-156 of the text, Cone explains: "Meeting at the Class Secretary's, September 30 and October 1, 1885. James B. Cone being somewhat of an amateur photographer, it was proposed that photographs of those present should be taken upon the piazza, and the two accompanying groups [portraits] were the result of the experiment. The group of gentlemen consists of Barnard with his luxuriant white beard, Loomis, Andrews, and Bissell, all standing, with Comstock in front of Bissell, and Cone next, the two last seated. The group of ladies consists of Mrs. Andrews, whose face is in profile, Mrs. Cone and Mrs. Bissell, all seated, with Miss Eva Comstock standing between the two last, and Mrs. James B. Cone behind Mrs. Andrews, the group being guarded on the right and left by Comstock and Cone standing, Comstock uncovered and Cone with hat on, both, however, being wholly unconscious that they were within the field of the camera." This is a very readable, first-person account of the early days at Yale, beginning with the author's matriculation in 1826.

London: T.F. Robey, 1890. Very Good. 16 black-and-white collotype views loose, as issued, in a light green envelope. Title from envelope. "Robey's Series" -- on envelope and on each image. Thomas F. Robey was a photographer active in London beginning in the 1890s. From about 1894 to about 1905 he was also active as a commercial photographer and printer with Eustace Curzon. They were among many photographers producing platinotypes, or platinum prints, around the turn of the century. "Platinogram" was the name given by Robey to these images made from platinotypes. As listed on the envelope the views are: The Tower Bridge, Tower of London, London Bridge, Royal Exchange, St. Paul's (West Front), Embankment, Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Rotten Row, Piccadilly Circus, Albert Hall, Albert Memorial, Crystal Palace, Trafalgar Square, Ludgate Circus, and the Great Wheel. There is no date of publication, but the images appear to be from the 1890s. The detail in the street scenes is particularly…

There is a very tiny dampstain to the back bottom corner and the top edge has a small discoloration near the spine. "The first picture - the first shot - in this large and fascinating volume of Henri-Cartier-Bresson's photographic portraits is much more than merely strange. I know nothing about the main figure in that picture beyond a time, 1967, and a place, Israel; but I know enough to be captivated by something unfamiliar, yet inescapable". Time Period & 1932-1985. Description:
Routledge, 1990. 8vo size trade paperback; 390 pages including index From back: "This is a unique study, continuing the work of Merleau-Ponty and Heidegger, and using the techniques of phenomenology against the prevailing nihilism of our culture. It expands our understanding of the human potential for spiritual self-realization by interpreting it as the developing of a bodily-felt awareness informing our gestures and movements. The author argues that a psychological focus on our experiences of well-being and pathology as embodied beings contribute significantly to a historically relevant critique of idealogy. It also provides an essential touchstone in experience for a fruitful individual and collective response to the dangers of nihilism." Edgewear, moderate wear to covers with sunned spine; marginalia, underlining and very light highlighting on least 58 pages prior to page 107; two previously folded page corners, some stray ink marks on outside pages.
