A committee, on behalf of the Union Merchants' Exchange, chaired by Mr. Samuel, were petitioning Speaker Blaine to use his influence to clear the Mississippi River of rapids, sandbars, snags, and wrecks. The rear cover has the notation that at the regular meeting of the Board of Directors of the Union Merchants' Exchange, Jan. 12, 1874, the memorial was unanimously approved and the Committee was instructed to submit the same to the Congress..
