About This Item

[Princeton]: Privately printed, 1972. Hardcover. 8vo. Blue cloth with gilt lettering. ix, 69pp. Frontispiece, illustrations, pictorial endpapers. Near fine. Light inoffensive stain on outer page edges. Bright and tight first edition of this memorial tribute, limited to 1000 copies printed for Stevenson's Princeton University class of 1922. This unique family copy hails from the library of Senator Adlai E. Stevenson III (b. 1930). Tipped in is an Autograph Letter Signed from a Lawrence Lewis Anderson Jr., 2pp (single leaf), 5" X 8", Princeton, NY, 9 December 1973. Very good. Boldly penned in blue ballpoint, it reads in part: "Herewith a copy of a small book privately printed by P-ton Class of 1922 at the time of presentation of the bronze bust of A.E.S. to the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International affairs here. I have sent two other copies to Nance [Stevenson], along with the name and address of the sculptress of the bust.... The book is a bit parochial (and oriented to Class of '22), but you may find interest in the address by George Kennan -- and in the speech by Adlai III. Mrs. Chandler had a brother in my class (1918), but he was just a nodding acquaintance of mine. The copies of the little book are supplied with the good wishes of the Class of '22...." Signed simply "L.L.A." Elisabeth Gordon Chandler (1913-2006) sculpted the superb head-and-shoulders bust of Stevenson that serves as this book's frontispiece, and her brother Harry Brace Gordon Jr. (1896-1961) was the classmate of Anderson's to which he refers. Tipped facing the half-title page is a heavy stock 4½" X 3" printed "With the Compliments of the Class of 1922" card (with scribbled note "One for Mr. Anderson and Two for the Senator's Lady").
