About This Item
1939 hardcover as pictured. First American Edition, translated from Norwegian by Arthur Chater. Composed of nine portraits of people and places, this collection of essays displays Undset's keen appreciation of the complexity of human nature and history. In these essays, the nobel laureate examines the spiritualist movement in Norwegian religion, the psychology of D. H. Lawrence, two treasure troves of folklore in the work of Marie Bregendahl of Denmark and Leo Weismantel of Germany, the medieval author Margery Kempe, the legacy of Catholics persecuted during the English Reformation, and the cultural history and beautiful landscapes of the island of Gotland in Sweden and Glastonbury in England. Binding is firm. Green cloth boards with blue and brown stamping are clean and show minimal wear. Pencil marking on FFEP. Text is age tanned but appears otherwise clean and unmarked. Dust jacket is rubbed and scuffed with small chips and tears, and a large peice missing at top of spine. Your purchase helps support our small village library. s AR
