Boston: Houghton, Mifflin and Co, 1884. Hardcover. Very Good. 111 p.; 21 cm. Plain grey cloth with small printed spine label. Top page edges gilt. Printed at the Riverside Press by H.O. Houghton & Co. BAL 325. Inscribed on front free endpaper: "Miss Bayard. Boston, 1886." With: calling card of Dr. Clarence J. Blake. This was evidently a present to Miss Bayard of Boston from Dr. Clarence J. Blake (1843-1919), professor of otology at Harvard Medical School, who worked with Alexander Graham Bell to develop the ear phoautograph, a tool to transcribe speech sounds to help the deaf perfect their speech. In Very Good Condition: ends of spine slightly frayed; spine label rubbed and faded; cloth is lightly soiled; pages are clean and crisp.
