G+ Wear to edges and corners (stains, slight scuffing and rubbing, some fraying to cloth; chiefly at head and foot of spine and lower right corners); inner hinges weakening (chiefly to lower inner hinges); rear free endpaper chipped and torn; slight internal uniform browning (chiefly to edges and preliminaries). 325 pages + plate. Apparent first issue of the romantic novel; notable for the author's 2-page preface (taking the Roman Catholic Church in Mexico to task for the country's social as well as spiritual condition) and the portrait photograph of the story's protagonist. Inscribed by Hale in black ink on front free endpaper: 'Presented to / Miss Posey (?) Cooke, / by her Friend and Relative, / The author. / Oct. 22, 1914'. Uncommon.1 b/w Photograph / Plate (frontispiece portrait).
