About This Item

London: Printed by Tho. Newcomb, 1653 First edition. Octavo. 19x15 cm. Pp. 2629 - 2644. Two folded sections, uncut. Complete issue. Two library stamps. A very good copy. Very rare! Complete issue of this newsletter, or magazine (Issue No. 165). "From Thursday, August 4 to Thursday August 11, 1653." Mercurius Politicus was a newsletter published weekly from June, 1650 until the English Restoration in May, 1660. Under the editorship of Marchamont Nedham, it supported the republican governments. This was Nedham's most significant enterprise, which he used as a platform for the Commonwealth regime. The newsletter began in June, 1650 and settled into a serious vein as a voice of the republican movement of the day. The newsletter continued for the next decade, the term of the Commonwealth era, under alternative titles like the Public Intelligence or Public Intelligencer. In 1655 the Lord Protector, Oliver Cromwell, rewarded Nedham with an official post, so that Nedham was then perceived as a spokesman for the regime. Very, very scarce..
