About This Item

Sei Sei Doh, Japan, 1980. Edition Unstated. Hardcover (in Slipcase). Near Fine Condition/No Dust Jacket. [SHUNGA] Utamaro, Kitagawa. The Merry Drinkers, Japan: Sei Sei Doh, 1980. Octavo, Volume 2 of a 2-book Shunga series that also included The Gifted Venus, pp. 9, 2, 27 painting reproductions (most double-p.), 8 (Japanese text). Cloth boards, illustrated cardboard slipcase. First nine pages are a translation in English of the original Japanese text that went with the Utamaro paintings, which illustrate the bawdy Asian tale we know as "The Merry Drinkers." Then come the paintings, then the Japanese text. The English translation, by the Australian Peter Dale, is graphic and sometimes crude, in keeping with the tone of The Merry Drinkers. Rough but high-quality stock -- leaves are uncut but there is no reason to cut them as the verso areas are blank. Near fine in very good slipcase. Leaves clean and tight. Size: Octavo (standard book size). unpaginated. One volume of the 2-volume set. Text is in multiple languages. Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo. Category: Erotica; Japan; 18th century; Antiquarian & Rare. Pictures of this item not already displayed here available upon request.
