About This Item

New York, NY: Four Winds Press, 1975. First Edition, First Printing 1st Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/Fine. Thomas di Grazia (Illustrator). Ex-Lib/Uncirculated from Temple Sinai, Pittsburg, PA,Children's Library. Text/NEW & Bright. Vintage 19775 First Edtion, 1st Printing. Pale orange linen boards/VG. DJ/Fine; under library mylar. Polish-American biographer, novelist & poet Yuri Suhl (1908 -1986) wrote 4 volumes of Yiddish poetry; this is one of 10 children's books written in English. 10 years old Shloimeh first saw the stranger by the synagogue door at evening prayer, in a frayed caftan & muddy, wrinkled boots --- an attire common for the town's poor Jews. The boy wonders who might invite him home for meal & lodgings? Shlonmeh knew not his family where his parents squabble over truly insufficient food, is taken back when his father has him invite the man stranger home. Their guest, Naftoli, with a speech pattern of peppering it w/poetry, proves to be a bachen --- a merrymaker at weddings! His brief stay uplifts their family's spirits w/a surprise top-off of a full larder before departure! 45 pgs w/illustrations from Thomas di Grazia.
