About This Item
Norman and London: University of Oklahoma Press, 1980. Fourth Printing of the Second Edition . Trade Paperback. Near Fine. 6" x 9. 335 Pages Indexed. Volume 51 in The Civilization of the American Indian series. No marks or stamps and flawless interior text pages. Illustrated with 38 black and white photographs and maps. A little over 100 years ago the United States took possession of New Mexico and immediately became involved in Indian trouble. In theory the country belonged to the people of Spansh blood who had been holding the upland sheep pastures and the narrow fields beside the rivers for two and one-half centuries. But it was an enormous and an untamed land. Far too big for the handful of Mexicans to occupy and the Apaches Navajos regarded it is their own particular private preserve. It was their home and they were ready for the fight. The book concludes with an evaluation of the situation the Mescaleros face today on their beautiful reservation in New Mexico. One hopes this warm, sympathetic history will find a wide audience to affect the prevalent misconceptions and stereotypes of Indians held by many Americans. Contents in 15 Chapters: After Four Centuries An Introduction, The Desert Breed The Apaches and Their Way of Life, Apache Against Spaniard, No Hope for Peace The Americans Take Over, Hunger and Defeat The Mescaleros Give Up, The Mescaleros Against General Carleton, The Mescaleros Choose Freedom, The Mescaleros Settle Down, Victorio Takes the Warpath, The Disarming of the Mescaleros, Victorio Goes Under, The Apaches in Exile, Fifty Years of Difficulty, The Indians Get a New Deal, and Today and Tomorrow The Mescaleros Face the Future.
