About This Item
New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1975. First Edition, first printing. 8vo, publisher’s original tangerine cloth lettered in gilt, in the original dustjacket. x, 335 pp. The book is quite fine, the jacket is also fine though with a touch of minor toning. FIRST EDITION OF THIS CLASSIC BOOK of essays on semiotics, language and culture. Percy argues a middle-ground between Judeo-Christian ethics, which give the individual freedom and responsibility; and the rationalism of science and behaviorism, which positions man as an organism in an environment and strips him of this freedom.
