Saint Petersburg, [Eduard Prats], 1865. 8vo. Contemporary Russian morocco-backed pebble-grained cloth, spine with raised bands and lettered in gilt; pp. [2], xii, [3]-185; minimal rubbing to binding; apart from light browning to title, a very good and clean copy; provenance: from Tsarskoie Selo Gymnasium Library, the progressive pre-university school in the St. Petersburg suburb that served as Imperial residence (stamp on title), and inked out inscription, ms. shelfmark label to spine. Very rare first edition in bookform of the seminal On the Method of the Natural Sciences and the Role of these Sciences in general Education. 'It is generally believed that he [Strakhov] was the translator of Lyell’s report, published in the Journal of the Ministry of National Education, which introduced Darwin’s evolutionary theory to the Russian reading public. In an article in the journal Time in 1862, he surveyed Darwin’s ideas … Strakhov greeted Darwin’s theory as an addition to science and as a modern world view. He credited Darwin for having been the first scientist to formulate an “imminent law” of the development of organisms – that is, a law that had no room for supernatural interference with the evolution of living forms. Although Darwin’s theory did not answer all the intricate questions of biological evolution, it was built on sound foundations’ (Glick, The Comparative Reception of Darwinism, p. 233, referring to this title by Strakhov). - The book assembles contributions to various periodicals, written in the late 1850s and early 1860s. OCLC locates a single copy, at Columbia University; not in COPAC.
