About This Item

NY: Macmillan, 1917. First edition, first printing. Previous owner's bookplate to front fixed endpaper, slight rubbing to covers, but near fine overall. Original red cloth with titles and decoration in gilt and black, octavo, pp viii, 344. Color frontispiece. Publisher's 8-page catalogue of Jack London's books and 1 title by Alfred W. Pollard at rear

In this work Jack London exposes cruelties practiced by trainers of animals for the vaudeville stage. "Michael, Brother of Jerry" stimulated the formation of Jack London Clubs throughout the US (membership was reported at 400,000 by 1924) leading to the virtual disappearance of on-stage animal acts.
