Set in the the tumultuous 16th century Europe; it follows Michael the Finn, the illegitimate son of aristocracy, brought up in Finland. As a young man left Finland for wider Europe, found himself in France, but, disgusted at the corruption and intrigue set sail for the holy land on a pilgrimage. When he is left for dead in southern Germany after being robbed, he is found by a woman whom he marries, but, then has the horrifying experience of watching her burnt alive, as she was accused of being a witch; "After this hideous ordeal, he joins the Protestant-peasant forces in their fight for freedom and the Reformation." – from front fold over panel blurb. Softening and rubbing of the back strip edges and rubbing of the lower book edge and top book corners. A very slight cock of the spine with uniform tanning of the text block edges. Faint offset tanning and foxing to the end pages with original bookseller's rubberstamp to the lower left-hand corner of the free front end page. Age toning of the pages. Chipping of the dustwrapper corners and back strip edges. The top and bottom edge of the rear panel shows a few small closed tears.
